Ian’s been away a lot recently travelling with work which is why we’ve been a little quiet on here of late. However, before he went he ordered several photography books and I opened them gleefully as they arrived. One book really sparked my imagination…
That book was ‘Why it does not have to be in focus – Modern photography explained’ by Jackie Higgins. One image in particular caught my eye, ‘Every … Bernd and Hilla Becher Gable Sided Houses’ by Idris Khan, 2004. It is a composite of half timbered buildings, very blurred and looking like a smudged charcoal sketch.
I wanted to do something similar, but different to fit my own style, so I searched my files for a suitable image and found one of a bandstand on Brighton seafront. Now what to do with it? I’m not usually a photoshop fan, doing most of my processing in Lightroom, but I knew I would need photoshop for what I wanted to achieve… so there I went. Using layers and stylize filters I turned my image into a line drawing. I then added further layers and transformations to duplicate and pull the bandstand into different positions. I’m very happy with the result!
